Colin Powell appeared on the CBS program “Face the Nation” Sunday, and stated that he will not leave the Republican Party, but that the GOP has moved too far to the right, and that has threatened it’s future, he also stated that if the party doesn’t expand it’s base, it will “watch the world go by.”
Powell then went on to talk about how he endorsed candidate Barack Obama, because he felt that Obama was the most qualified. Maybe he believes adding some socialists to the party will help build that large base, since he obviously chose one, while spiking the candidacy of his friend, liberal Republican John McCain by his last minute endorsement.
Powell who has admitted to voting for Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Jimmy Carter in past presidential elections, criticizes Rush Limbaugh, and Dick Cheney for being too far to the right, but I think you can also add John McCain to that list as well. I wonder what Republicans he considers as examples of his historical ideal? Where is that Republican Harry Reid, or Nancy Pelosi from the GOP past which we have forgotten? Where have the Republican John Kerry, and John Edwards gone? No matter how you slice it, the GOP is a right of center party, and likely always will be.
Former Secretary Powell, is one of those Republicans known as a RINO (Republican in name only), these lost souls see themselves as crusaders, saving the Republican party from themselves, and believe that only by moving to the left, can the party survive. RINO’s are actually more at home with the Democratic party, or are in some cases neo-socialists, it is usually a total mystery why they stay Republican, although sometimes they do switch parties such as with Sen. Arlen Specter, who left the Republican party when it became clear that he would face a strong primary challenge.
Powell believes that he holds the cure for the ailing Republican party – higher taxes, and bigger government in the form of increased social programs, but to be honest, if that’s his cure, I would rather keep the disease.
